Job Purpose:
- The Peer Support Specialist at LIFESTREAM BEHAVIORAL CENTER is responsible for providing support and guidance to individuals facing mental health and substance use challenges. The role involves leveraging personal experiences to inspire hope and promote recovery, serving as a role model in demonstrating effective coping techniques and self-help strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Establish supportive and trusting relationships with clients, fostering an environment of empathy and understanding.
- Share personal experiences of recovery to offer hope and encouragement to clients, while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- Assist clients in identifying personal goals for recovery and developing strategies to achieve them.
- Facilitate group sessions and peer support meetings, encouraging open communication and mutual support among participants.
- Collaborate with clinical staff to ensure a comprehensive approach to client care, providing insights from a peer perspective.
- Advocate for clients within the community and help them navigate access to resources and services.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of client interactions and progress, adhering to confidentiality and privacy standards.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development to enhance skills and knowledge in peer support and behavioral health.
- Engage in outreach activities to raise awareness about peer support services and promote the mission of LIFESTREAM BEHAVIORAL CENTER.
Required Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Certification as a Peer Support Specialist is preferred.
Required Experience:
- Minimum of one year of experience working in a mental health or substance use recovery setting.
- Personal experience in recovery from mental health or substance use challenges is highly valued.
- Experience in providing peer support or mentorship in a professional setting is preferred.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with clients and team members.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries while providing empathetic and supportive peer guidance.
- Understanding of recovery principles and the ability to apply them in a peer support context.
- Capacity to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency in basic computer skills, including the use of email and word processing software.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and discretion.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
